Night Track
by on 1/10/2010 11:45:58 AM

I have been wanting to do a painting like this for some time. I am fascinated by the patterns of tire tracks in the fresh snow. This is a mix of watercolor and acrylic. I varied the application of transparent color and opaque paint to get the subtle color changes of the snow illuminated by incandescent light.

Hi Chris, I really like all of your paintings but I was especially interested in this one because I always wondered what a good night time scene would look like. Never considered the winter for one thing. You have proven that it can be interesting and look good. Did you use a photo? If so, did you do anything special to get the light to work for you? Thanks,Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,
It was from a photo. I started with broad watercolor washes and established the basic value and color pattern. I then layered thin acrylics. I changed colors (warm and cool) mixed with white each subsequent layer and painted it thin enough so that previous layers would show through here and there. I also used real fine detail hatching doing the same thing with blues, pinks, oranges, etc. In the end, I used broad washes of watercolor to tone things down if there was too much contrast. I think the key was getting the black background really dark and getting the sky the right value. Once they were in place it felt like a night scene.
